My Favorite Parisian Pathways for my mature friends

A First-Timer's Guide to Authentic Paris

For me, Paris is usually a brief but enjoyable stop on my journey from London to Guadeloupe. It’s a chance to spend a day reconnecting with friends and family.
Interestingly, despite Paris's proximity, some of my London-based friends have never experienced the city or even ridden the Eurostar. Recently, a few of them decided to take the plunge and asked for my top recommendations for their first Parisian adventure. This is what I say to them. It's easy to get swept up in the grandeur of the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre. And while those are absolutely essential. Then, I share a few of my favourite streets and a top tip for an unforgettable Eiffel Tower experience that truly captures the heart and soul of the city, especially if they are looking for a more intimate adventure. For my fellow mature travellers, these spots offer a chance to slow down and truly savour the Parisian atmosphere.

Rue Saint-Rustique: My Romantic Stroll in Montmartre

My first walk through Rue Saint-Rustique in Montmartre, Paris, felt like stepping onto a movie set. Can you believe it's probably the oldest street in Montmartre? At 130 meters it’s the highest street in Paris. As I wandered, I could almost feel the centuries of history beneath my feet. It's truly a timeless place, especially knowing Maurice Utrillo captured its essence in his 1926 painting. Finding it designated as Montmartre's first pedestrian-only street back in 1973 made it even more special for a leisurely stroll. The gorgeous views of the Sacré-Cœur were simply breathtaking, and spotting those charming little restaurant terraces tucked away along the route? Pure Parisian magic.

Rue du Prévôt: A Journey Back to Medieval Paris

One of the most fascinating detours I took on my first time in Paris was to Rue du Prévôt. Tucked away in the 4th arrondissement, this street is incredibly narrow – I'm talking as little as 1.8 meters wide in some spots! It felt like discovering a secret passage. Knowing it was once called "Rue Percée" (Pierced Street) and then renamed in honour of a city Provost back in 1877 just adds to its allure. Unlike many parts of modern Paris, Rue du Prévôt has genuinely held onto its medieval character. Walking on those old cobblestones, surrounded by leaning, ancient houses, truly felt like I'd stepped through a portal to the past. It's an absolute hidden gem in Paris for history lovers.

Rue Drevet: Conquering Montmartre's Charming Steps

And then there's Rue Drevet in Montmartre. This isn't your typical flat street; it's a delightful, steep series of stone steps that truly embody the unique charm of this artistic neighborhood. While it offers a bit of a workout, every step up was rewarded with that distinct Montmartre ambiance. It connects Rue des Trois Frères with Rue André Barsacq, and as I ascended, I could picture why it's been featured in films like "Ronin." It's such a picturesque and authentic way to experience the hillside, leading you right up towards the majestic Sacré-Cœur. Definitely bring comfortable shoes for this one!

Ditch the Pricey Pretense: My Authentic Eiffel Tower Experience

My favourite way to experience its grandeur is far more authentic and intimate. Instead, I craft my own Parisian feast: a fresh, crusty baguette, a selection of gooey, decadent cheeses (brie is always a must!), perfectly cured French salami, vibrant fresh strawberries, and, of course, a bottle of exquisite wine (and trust me, always remember the opener! I got caught a few times and had to buy one). Most wine bottles are corked.
Then, I head to a prime spot along the Seine – I have a particular lesser-known walkway that offers front-row, unobstructed views of the Tower. As dusk settles and the Eiffel Tower begins its dazzling light show, you'll witness proposals, hear corks popping, and realize that this authentic, unpretentious experience far surpasses any stuffy rooftop reservation. It’s the true romantic

The Mighty Arc de Triomphe: A View You Can't Miss

While the Eiffel Tower offers one iconic view, for another perspective that truly captures the grandeur of Paris, I highly recommend visiting the Arc de Triomphe. Standing majestically at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, this colossal monument was commissioned by Napoleon to honour his military victories. As I stood beneath its massive arches, gazing at the intricate sculptures and the names of battles and generals inscribed on its walls.

Where I Stay in Paris: Comfortable and Convenient Options

Sometimes I stay with family and friends but sometimes I just want my own space. For the first time in Paris, especially for mature travellers, finding a comfortable and well-located place to rest is key.

  • Ibis Paris Gare du Nord is where I usually stay. If you're arriving by Eurostar, as I do, it's conveniently located near the major transport hub, making it incredibly easy to get around the city.

Dining Solo in Paris? My Top Recommendations!
Travelling solo in Paris is a joy, and dining alone can be a wonderful experience. Here are a few types of places I always recommend for a comfortable and delicious solo meal:

  • Bistrots and Brasseries: Many traditional bistros have small tables perfect for one. The lively atmosphere means you won't feel out of place, and you can enjoy classic French fare. Look for ones with counter seating.
  • Crêperies: Casual, cozy, and perfect for a quick, satisfying meal. They're informal and welcoming to solo diners.
  • "Comptoir" Style Restaurants: These often have counter seating where you can watch the chefs at work. It's an interactive and engaging way to dine alone.
  • Covered Markets: You'll find a variety of food stalls with communal or individual seating, perfect for a casual and diverse meal.

Secure and Enriching Solo Parisian Escape

My thoughts on Paris: For the mature solo traveller, a truly fulfilling Parisian adventure hinges on personal safety and comfort, especially when venturing out after dark, and navigating the city with ease using its diverse transportation options. Beyond the iconic landmarks, seek out authentic, local experiences in charming neighbourhoods and relaxed settings to truly immerse yourself in the City of Light.
